IT Integration and Transformation for Tampa General Hospital’s Acquisitions

Tampa General Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital and one of the most comprehensive medical facilities in West Central Florida. The organization serves 12 counties with a combined population exceeding four million people. With more than 1,000 licensed beds and over 15,000 staff members, Tampa General Hospital is also one of the region’s largest employers.

Project Summary

When Tampa General Hospital acquired three hospitals from Community Health Systems, the organization engaged Avarion, now part of Med Tech Solutions, to manage and staff a comprehensive IT integration and transformation initiative known as Project TGH North.

The engagement encompassed the integration of the acquired hospitals, physician practices, ambulatory centers, and a surgery center into Tampa General Hospital’s IT ecosystem. By relying on MTS to lead the initiative, the health system could continue focusing its internal resources on other strategic growth and technology priorities while assessing the acquired organizations’ long-term staffing and support requirements.

The project was completed in two phases. Phase 1 focused on Day 1 readiness, legal compliance, operational and technical cutover planning, business-system conversions, and preparation for the broader clinical and technology transition. Phase 2 encompassed the full conversion from Community Health Systems platforms to Tampa General Hospital’s clinical, financial, business, and infrastructure environments.

 

Key Project Deliverables

• Managed the IT components of the acquisition and integration of three hospitals, including associated physician practices, ambulatory centers, and a surgery center.
• Oversaw the IT-related changes required to support legal compliance before Day 1.
• Developed operational and technical cutover plans and prepared the command center for Day 1.
• Conducted discovery and current-state assessments for the planned Epic conversion from Oracle.
• Developed Phase 2 implementation, conversion, activation, and support plans.
• Performed a detailed crosswalk between the Community Health Systems and Tampa General Hospital IT ecosystems to identify gaps, conversion options, and associated costs.
• Supported the conversion of business systems spanning human resources, payroll, timekeeping, finance, and supply chain.
• Managed major workstreams covering data management and integration, third-party departmental applications, ancillary systems, revenue cycle, ambulatory care, infrastructure, and inpatient clinical systems.
• Completed the IT conversion of the acquired facilities’ voice, network, endpoint, clinical, financial, and business systems.
• Established project governance and success criteria and guided the program from planning through activation, cutover, and post-go-live support.
• Coordinated with Epic and Tampa General Hospital to manage risk and support on-time delivery.
• Deployed program leadership, project managers, a project coordinator, a project advisor and auditor, certified Epic resources, principal trainers, data conversion analysts, interface analysts, and report writers and business intelligence resources.
